The Keurig K-Select Makes Great Coffee

The reason most people want a single-serve coffee maker is so that they can enjoy a great cup of coffee without having to brew a whole pot. Based on this criteria, the K-Select performed well in our reviews. There are all kinds of different K-cups to choose from for Keurig coffee makers and this machine brews the perfect cup no matter what your favorite is.

The first time you run the machine, it’s a good idea to brew a test cup with just water to clean out the machine – after that, you’re good to brew. It takes about 3 minutes to bring the water up to temperature and another minute to brew a regular cup of coffee or just over a minute and a half for a strong brew.

Features and Options on the Keurig K-Select

As we’ve already mentioned, the Keurig K-Select keeps the features and functions to a minimum. You can choose between four different cup sizes:

  • 6 ounces
  • 8 ounces
  • 10 ounces
  • 12 ounces

Each option has its own button – you simply power on the machine, wait the 3 minutes for the water to reach the desired temperature and then press the button that matches the cup size that you’re looking for. They aren’t labeled numerically, but each button is explained in the manual and it’s easy to figure out which size each one is by looking at them.

If you want to opt for a stronger brew you simply press the strong button before pressing your chosen cup size. The strong button will light up to indicate you’re brewing in strong mode.

The water reservoir tank holds 52 ounces, which is about 5 full cups so you won’t have to refill the tank every morning. Keurig also includes a filter attachment and 2 complimentary filters if you want to filter your water before brewing. Typically, each filter will last about 2 months.

To add a new K-cup to the machine you simply push up on the cup tray, drop your new K-cup in the tray and pop it back into place. The machine will automatically puncture the container so that it’s ready for brewing.

At the bottom of the machine, there’s a drip tray that will hold up to 8 ounces of overflow. With the drip tray in place, the machine will hold a cup up to 6.5 inches tall – if you remove the tray it will hold a cup of about 7.4 inches.

Cleaning and Maintenance of the Keurig K-Select

Cleaning the Keurig K-Select is straightforward. The K-cup holder can be removed from the machine for hand cleaning. The water tank and drip tray are also removable and both are dishwasher safe as long as you place them on the top rack. It’s important to make sure they’re well rinsed before placing them back in the machine so that lint from your dishcloth doesn’t contaminate the machine.

Over time the machine can build up with minerals which will affect its operation. That’s why it’s a good idea to descale it every 3 to 6 months. We reviewed the process explained in the manual and found the instructions easy to follow.

Comparing the K-Select to the K-Classic

The Keurig K-Classic (K55) and the K-Select have many features in common. They’re both designed for single-serve brewing and they both brew a great cup of coffee. The main difference is that the K-Select allows you to brew a 12-ounce cup of coffee, while the maximum size on the Classic is 10 ounces.

Comparing the Keurig K Compact vs K Select

The Keurig K Compact is a smaller machine than the K-Select. It’s a great choice if you have limited counter space. It has a smaller water tank reservoir at 36 ounces and its largest brew size is 10 ounces.

Comparing the K-Select to the K55

If you’ve already checked out our review of the Keurig K55, you’ll know there are a lot of similarities between the two machines. Both will brew 6, 8 and 10-ounce cups, but the K-Select also offers the option of brewing a 12 ounce coffee for coffee lovers that need a little extra head start in the morning. One other slight difference is the size of the water reservoirs. The K-Select has a 52-ounce reservoir while the tank on the K55 is only 48 ounces.
